This book is a work of fiction and is based on a place name Brickland. The events narrated here, however, follow closely the story of British Honduras (now Belize), in the last half of the eighteenth century. There was an actual crisis in 1797, which led to a meeting of the inhabitants to consider a question similar to the one contained in this story. During the time covered in Exiles, present day Belize was known by many names --- Rivermouth bey, Wallix Bellise and Baliz, the commoner ones. Brickland was chosen for its neutrality.
