Description
If we have been doing something for more than fifty years and it is not working, it is time to change it. The way Nigeria has been going, the way it has been managed, and the way in which we have applied ourselves to it does not give us the luxury of a learning curve. It is no longer enough to do something better. It is no longer enough for aspiring political leaders to do something better. We have to do things differently. It should no longer be acceptable for aspiring leaders to simply promise not to be corrupt or to be less corrupt in order to be endorsed for office. It is essential that we elect leaders who are creative, productive and entrepreneurial; so that corruption will neither be necessary nor attractive to them. Their claims of creativity and productivity must also be backed by guarantees as they aspire. The ultimate, the utopian solution to our problem is leadership: We need a creative and entrepreneurial president with a social conscience. With that in place, every other thing will fall in line.In reality, politicians are not our problems – the people are. Politicians only piggyback on what the people make available, what they can tolerate, what they can let political entrepreneurs to get away with. For when the people stand up, the politicians, the political directorate will stand down. The majority of Nigerians do not fully understand the basic tenets of democracy. Therefore they live in a democracy as if they thrive in a theocracy or autocracy. They understand that it is a government of the people (as they go in to vote) and for the people (as they sit back and expect the benefits from democracy). But they miss out on the most essential element – their responsibility to democracy (Government by the people)The intention of this book is to empower the grassroots, the ordinary person, every Nigerian. It is to enable us to know when to get involved, how to get involved, in what combination to get involved in the management of the resource, of the real estate, of the corporation called Nigeria that belongs to all of us. We do not have to be confrontational to be effective. But we cannot afford to continue to fail in our responsibility to democracy. For where we continue to do so, we reserve no moral high-ground from which to complain against those that pilfer us. - from Amzon
